Hunger Action Month Calls Indianapolis Community to Help Neighbors Facing Hunger

Hunger Action Month Calls Indianapolis Community to Help Neighbors Facing Hunger

Lutheran Child & Family Services invites community partners to give, volunteer and share throughout September

INDIANAPOLIS — September 2026 — This Hunger Action Month, Lutheran Child & Family Services (LCFS) is inviting Indianapolis businesses, congregations, government agencies, community organizations and individuals to join The Sharing Place food pantry in helping local families access nutritious food.

The need is significant. In Marion County, more than half of Marion County residents experiencing food insecurity are estimated to have incomes that make them ineligible for SNAP benefits.

Located in Lawrence Township at 6501 Sunnyside Road, The Sharing Place and its SilverBox home-delivery program provide food, education and support to seniors, families and youth. Together, these programs impact more than 80,000 neighbors and support more than 20,000 families annually.

“I believe hunger is solvable; all of us the community, businesses, and organizations working together is the solution.”, Sven Schumacher, Executive Director, Lutheran Child & Family Services of IN/KY, Inc and CEO of the Foundation for LCFS.

“The Sharing Place is special because it directly helps people and is a wonderful way to engage people in a serious issue in our community. Folks can work at different levels with us, can support us financially, or can volunteer, or can collect food in their churches and places of work. And it‘s a very important part of the fight against hunger in Lawrence Township. We have been very much blessed by the relationship we have with that community, especially the MSD of Lawrence Township.”

During Hunger Action Month, LCFS is asking the community to take three actions: give, volunteer, and host a food drive.

Individuals and organizations can donate funds or needed food items, organize volunteer groups at The Sharing Place, and share LCFS Hunger Action Month messages through their organizations and social networks.

“This support has saved us! I’m not sure what we’d be doing for groceries, having just lost both jobs unexpectedly! Thank you for everything you do!” said a Sharing Place neighbor and guest.

Held every September to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger. Hunger Action Month is a national Feeding America campaign.
