January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month: What Does That Mean for Us?

When we hear the words human trafficking, we often picture far-away places—crowded cities overseas or shadowy operations in massive urban centers. What we don’t picture is Indiana, our neighborhoods, our schools, our youth.

For a young person caught in trafficking, escape isn’t as simple as leaving. The trauma is deep. Control is real. And the pull to return to what feels familiar—even when it’s harmful—can trap both youth and their families in a cycle that feels impossible to break.

In consultation with state agencies, LCFS has expanded our onsite IMPACT program and deepened our long-standing partnership with Ascent 121 to support youth who are at risk of or experiencing trafficking in Lutherwood. Developing specialized treatment for young women, including a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to support them through their healing.

Human Trafficking Awareness Month reminds us that this issue isn’t just in the news. It’s here. It touches our community, our neighbors, and our children.

The scale of the problem can feel overwhelming, but each of us has a role to play. The U.S. Department of State’s article, 20 Ways You Can Help Fight Human Trafficking, lists practical steps—large and small—that anyone can take to make a difference.

At LCFS, we are grateful to stand with a community that refuses to look away. Your prayers, partnership, advocacy, and support help create pathways to safety, resilience, and restored lives.
