Independent
Living Skills Program
A Title IV-E Independent Living
Contract Provider
The
Independent Living Skills Program
is a multifaceted curriculum teaching
boys
and girls age 14 to 21 how to
care for and support themselves
after discharge. The program includes real life experiences in the
community to enhance learning and motivation. Eligible participants
include children at Lutherwood as well as children living in foster
or group homes.
Curriculum
includes such topics as budgeting, banking, safe leisure activities,
job seeking and job keeping skills, accessing community resources,
meal planning, cooking, and shopping, and finding an apartment.
Follow-up services may also be provided for up to 6 months.
Youth may be eligible to live in Trinity House, our independent
living group home. The spacious tri-level residence is located across
the street from Lutherwood Residential Treatment Center & School
for Youth. It accommodates up to 8 young men age 16-21 and is staffed
around the clock. Residents of Trinity House attend public school
and/or hold a job in the community. Lutherwood youth counselors
offer training and guidance to residents on such topics as money
management, health care, goal setting, meal planning, job skills,
volunteerism, apartment seeking and living, training in resistance
to drugs, personal control, and decision-making. Our approach is
individualized and strength-based to help our graduates successfully
transition into the community.
Youth
may also participate in the Scattered Sites Program, which offers
them the opportunity to transition into the community while living
in their own apartments. They continue to receive guidance and support
for up to 12 months from caring Lutherwood staff.
Follow-up
services may also be provided for up to 6 months after a youth leaves
the program.
