Who we are
Lutheran Child and Family Services
Lutheran Child and Family Services is a licensed, 501(c)3, non-profit organization committed to providing programs of compassionate care and counsel to enhance the dignity and quality of life. Founded as an orphanage by German Lutherans in 1883, Lutheran Child and Family Services has evolved and changed throughout the years, but one thing has remained the same and that is the committment to help those in need.
In 1996, construction was completed on a 24-bed secure dormitory, gymnasium, kitchen and dining hall that was designed to serve 60 children. In 2004, Lutheran Child and Family Services broke ground for a complete renovation and rebuilding of Lutherwood - the most ambitious building project in the history of the agency. In March 2008, the first phase of construction ended with complete state-of-the-art program centers (dormitories) and a chapel. These additions have increased the ability of Lutherwood to treat children in a modern, therapeutic and safe environment. Construction of the Family Strengthening Center was completed in June, 2009. Now that the project is complete, Lutherwood has the capability to treat 98 residential children and 60 additional therapeutic day school students.
Today's programs include: Lutherwood Residential Treatment Center and Education Academy; Emergency Shelter Care; Community Based Programming; Trinity House Independent Living Program; Youthbuild; and The Sharing Place Food Pantry.
The Foundation for Lutheran Child and Family Services
The Foundation for Lutheran Child and Family Services, Indiana, Inc. was established as a distinct entity in 1989 to build an endowment and create a financially secure future for the agency of Lutheran Child and Family Services. In 2006, The Foundation for Lutheran Child and Family Services assumed responsibility for management of all Lutheran Child and Family Services investments and philanthropic fundraising. This allows the agency to focus its attention on the important work of caring for children and families. The Foundation is also a 501(c)3, non-profit organization and donations are tax-deductible for donors.
